Pre-Summer Cleanse!

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Spring is the perfect time to shed whatever kind of weight (mental or physical) you’ve taken on during the winter. Cleansing can reset your body and mind for warm weather and sun, help release residual toxins, and reduce bloating and puffiness which helps you look your best when the long sleeves and pants come off. That being said, cleansing can mean a million different things for different people. Check out some suggestions we’ve compiled for different levels of cleansing. If you’re in New York, try our Not-Just-Juice Cleanse. It’s the perfect cleanse for busy New Yorkers who want to do the raw-vegan thing as a cleanse but might not have the time to do it at home. See below for more details:

Cleansing: It’s Not A Diet!

No matter what you aren’t putting into your body during a cleanse, the one thing you should not feel during the process is deprived and starving. We know, isn’t that the point? It isn’t!! So often, people fail at intense cleanses because they’re starving and can’t take it anymore. The key is in the timing. You shouldn’t be cleansing for weightloss. Ever. It may be a pleasant side effect, but it won’t work to permanently change your weight, so don’t even bother! Use a cleanse to re-train your body to crave healthy foods and healthy habits that will eventually aid in weight loss when you go back to your normal routine. Don’t do a cleanse after coming off of a marathon, a strict diet, or any other extreme situation. (Don’t start a cleanse the day after a huge party where you over-indulged either. While you might feel like you need to cleanse ASAP, doing so will only shock your system). You should know when your body needs a cleanse. When you start feeling run down, like you can’t wake up in the morning, that you’re unable to concentrate – this may mean you need to reboot. Cleansing is also a great way to kick bad habits like too much coffee, alcohol, sugar, wheat, or meat.

So, What to Do?

What kind of cleanse you do depends on your current diet and how active you plan to be during your cleanse. If you are a Standard American Diet-eater you might just want to cut out meat, dairy, wheat and sugar and see how that goes for a while. Going from the SAD diet directly to more than a day or two long juice cleanse, or a strict raw-food cleanse might shock your system. You’ll also probably be starving because you haven’t given your body a chance to readjust to not having certain substances. Be easy on yourself and you’ll be less likely to give up. Just make sure you are increasing your veggie intake, and try to incorporate fresh, organic (preferably green!) juices. Drink lots of water!

If you are already a fairly healthy eater, a vegetarian or a vegan, we’d recommend doing a raw foods cleanse for a few days, incorporating lots of fresh organic green juices. In lieu of a juice fast, you could try the raw-vegan route, with the last day or two (or three or four!) drinking only herbal tea, green juice and tons of water.

So, need some food ideas for your Pre-Summer Cleanse?

If you’re in NYC, let us take care of it for you! We have two cleanses to choose from, Shine and Glow, for different levels of calorie needs. Both cleanses provide three meals a day, two organic cold-pressed bottled green juices and even snacks. Just call 212-982-1231 to reserve, or email us at info@oneluckyduck.com. View pricing and menu options here.

If you can’t commit to three meals a day from us, why not stop by either One Lucky Duck location (Chelsea Market or Gramercy Park) and create your own cleanse? We have convenient bottled cold-pressed juices if you are going the liquid route, and a whole menu full of fresh juices and shakes to choose from, not to mention, all the raw food your little healthy bodies and souls desire. View our takeaway menu here. Or, as part of your cleanse, come dine in the garden at Pure Food and Wine.

Beautification from the inside out

Skin, Nails & Hair

Skin, Nails & Hair

Chances are if you are on our site reading this Duck News post then health and wellness are either interests or values in your life.  It may be common knowledge, but we do want to point out that there is a correlation between what you eat and your outside appearance, not just in regards to your weight but also in regards to the shine of your hair, glow of your skin and strength of your nails. It’s a beautification process that occurs from the inside out! Hence our favorite saying “Get the Glow”!

We have found a supplement, Skin, Nails & Hair by MegaFood, that lets just about everyone get the glow, even if you aren’t perfect ALL the time (lets face it who is). Not everyone can ALWAYS make the best the food choices, sleep eight hours a night, and  live in a “clean” environment (we are based in NYC, not exactly “fresh” air).  And you’d have to be pretty strict to not indulge in the occasional beer, pasta, and/or frozen margarita every now and then…(don’t worry we won’t judge you).

If you take Skin, Nails & Hair consistently over a period of 3 months (trust us, its worth the persistence) you will see a noticeable difference in the appearance of your skin, hair, and nails!  Its not cheating, it’s just ensuring that you “Get the Glow”!

The Sun Dilemma: Why should we have to choose between being tan, getting vitamin D, and being wrinkle/cancer free?

Friday, July 24th, 2009

What us New Yorkers like to on a sunny day

The Sun Dilemma: What New Yorkers like to do on a sunny day, even if we know its not the best idea according to our doctor

“It’s summer, its bright, wear sunscreen, and opt for shade”

This is pretty much common knowledge… We avoid sun because we don’t want wrinkles and/or skin cancer. And when we are in the sun, we are supposed to wear sunscreen to block its ultra violet rays.

BUT the sun is also our friend – and its ultra violet rays actually prompt our skin to make vitamin D, which is linked to bone health, strong immunity, and decreased risk of cancer.  It’s a tough call.  There is mounting evidence that Vitamin D is great for health, but I dare you to find a dermatologist who recommends hanging out sunscreen-less on a sunny day.

And then there is this dilemma – do we wear an appropriate SPF (i.e. not SPF 8 and more like SPF 30) or do we cheat and use a low SPF to get that beautiful tan faster and while we can (those in sunny California may not be able to sympathize, but NYC and the Midwest and all of the NE coast and other frigid climates – we know you get it…its only warm and sunny for like 3 months a year – you got to take advantage!)

So what’s the compromise?  Well…..We think we have figured it out!

PLUS

MegaFood’s Vitamin D3! Question: If your body makes vitamin D when prompted by the sun’s UV rays, but you wear sunscreen all the time (which blocks UV rays) to avoid the harmful aspects of the sun, how to you get vitamin D? Answer: take this supplement

We at One Lucky Duck have decided to make this whole process easier for you by putting all three of these things together in our Sunny Side Bundle so that you can protect yourself from the sun and reap the sun’s benefits at the same time.

See…a very complicated issue made simple by yours truly at One Lucky Duck :)

The Priti Polish Color Selection we offer at One Lucky Duck

The Priti Polish Color Selection we offer at One Lucky Duck

There is something wonderful about pampering yourself….

Which is why all the ladies here at One Lucky Duck decided to celebrate and have a “Mani-Pedi Friday” after work!!

What sets this mani-pedi friday apart from the others?

We finally started carrying a non-toxic nail polish!

So goodbye Essie and Opi, you have been replaced! –  we are bringing our own Priti Polish to the salon today!!

It’s exciting because we have been SEARCHING for a natural nail polish for a while now….but without those toxic ingredients like toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde (all known carcinogenic ingredients found in nail polish), we had a hard time finding one that didn’t chip and streak…. until we found Priti!

Priti Polish comes in a bottle that is recyclable, goes on evenly, is fast drying, super durable and completely non-toxic.  It was created by an ex-model, Created Kim D’Amato who was looking for pregnancy-safe beauty products.

We are not the only ones who love Priti, their all natural soy-based polish remover (biodegradable and it actually smells good) was featured in Body and Soul this month and their product will be in InStyle next month so look out for it!!

Coconut Oil – Not Just for Cooking!

Great Tip in the July 2009 of SELF Magazine about Coconut Oil:

SELF Magazine, July 2009

SELF Magazine, July 2009

“Virgin Coconut Oil contains the same fatty acids as those in your skin so it replaces moiture on your body better than olive oil or other hydrators do” – SELF, July 2009, “Beauty Flash”, pg 62

Virgin Oil De Coco-Creme (Coconut Oil/Butter)

Virgin Oil De Coco-Creme (Coconut Oil/Butter)

We have always loved using coconut oil outside of the kitchen and on our skin after a day in the sun, or after we shave, or sometimes even to shave with :) At One Lucky Duck we carry   Virgin Oil De Coco-Creme, a  completely RAW coconut oil with a tasty, mild coconut flavor that is ideal for whipping up dessert, as well as moisturizing with!
