Pre-Summer Cleanse!

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Spring is the perfect time to shed whatever kind of weight (mental or physical) you’ve taken on during the winter. Cleansing can reset your body and mind for warm weather and sun, help release residual toxins, and reduce bloating and puffiness which helps you look your best when the long sleeves and pants come off. That being said, cleansing can mean a million different things for different people. Check out some suggestions we’ve compiled for different levels of cleansing. If you’re in New York, try our Not-Just-Juice Cleanse. It’s the perfect cleanse for busy New Yorkers who want to do the raw-vegan thing as a cleanse but might not have the time to do it at home. See below for more details:

Cleansing: It’s Not A Diet!

No matter what you aren’t putting into your body during a cleanse, the one thing you should not feel during the process is deprived and starving. We know, isn’t that the point? It isn’t!! So often, people fail at intense cleanses because they’re starving and can’t take it anymore. The key is in the timing. You shouldn’t be cleansing for weightloss. Ever. It may be a pleasant side effect, but it won’t work to permanently change your weight, so don’t even bother! Use a cleanse to re-train your body to crave healthy foods and healthy habits that will eventually aid in weight loss when you go back to your normal routine. Don’t do a cleanse after coming off of a marathon, a strict diet, or any other extreme situation. (Don’t start a cleanse the day after a huge party where you over-indulged either. While you might feel like you need to cleanse ASAP, doing so will only shock your system). You should know when your body needs a cleanse. When you start feeling run down, like you can’t wake up in the morning, that you’re unable to concentrate – this may mean you need to reboot. Cleansing is also a great way to kick bad habits like too much coffee, alcohol, sugar, wheat, or meat.

So, What to Do?

What kind of cleanse you do depends on your current diet and how active you plan to be during your cleanse. If you are a Standard American Diet-eater you might just want to cut out meat, dairy, wheat and sugar and see how that goes for a while. Going from the SAD diet directly to more than a day or two long juice cleanse, or a strict raw-food cleanse might shock your system. You’ll also probably be starving because you haven’t given your body a chance to readjust to not having certain substances. Be easy on yourself and you’ll be less likely to give up. Just make sure you are increasing your veggie intake, and try to incorporate fresh, organic (preferably green!) juices. Drink lots of water!

If you are already a fairly healthy eater, a vegetarian or a vegan, we’d recommend doing a raw foods cleanse for a few days, incorporating lots of fresh organic green juices. In lieu of a juice fast, you could try the raw-vegan route, with the last day or two (or three or four!) drinking only herbal tea, green juice and tons of water.

So, need some food ideas for your Pre-Summer Cleanse?

If you’re in NYC, let us take care of it for you! We have two cleanses to choose from, Shine and Glow, for different levels of calorie needs. Both cleanses provide three meals a day, two organic cold-pressed bottled green juices and even snacks. Just call 212-982-1231 to reserve, or email us at info@oneluckyduck.com. View pricing and menu options here.

If you can’t commit to three meals a day from us, why not stop by either One Lucky Duck location (Chelsea Market or Gramercy Park) and create your own cleanse? We have convenient bottled cold-pressed juices if you are going the liquid route, and a whole menu full of fresh juices and shakes to choose from, not to mention, all the raw food your little healthy bodies and souls desire. View our takeaway menu here. Or, as part of your cleanse, come dine in the garden at Pure Food and Wine.

Not in NYC?

Check out our holiday posting from a while back for Tracy Anderson’s (trainer to the stars) fabulous website, where we developed a four-day cleanse for at-home preparation. You can view the plan and recipes from Tracy’s site here.

Lion Heart Herbs – How to Prepare Your Herbs

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Watch Elwin prepare a batch of Lion Heart Herbs, and see below for the written out directions:

500g bag  (approx 2-4 weeks supply of herbs)

1kg bag (approx 1-2 months supply of herbs)

What you’ll need:

Saucepan (stainless steel, ceramic or glass)

Spring Water (or filtered)

Wire Mesh Strainer

Jug/pitcher

Funnel

Herbs

½ a bag of the 500 kg or ¼ bag of the 1kg bag should last more than a week (remember, don’t throw away the used herbs, you can keep adding water and re-boiling them until the flavor and color of the tea is diminished, or at least three-four times. You will also be diluting the tea by ½ with fresh cold water after brewing)

Pour  ½ a bag of the 500g bag, or ¼ of the 1kg bag of herbs into the saucepan

Cover herbs with water  – use three – four times the amount of water as there are herbs (about 1 liter)

Over a low heat, bring the water to a boil and simmer for a few minutes.

Turn off heat, let stand to cool. With the wire mesh strainer placed over the jug or pitcher, strain the water into the jug/pitcher. Return the used herbs to the pot. You can use the boiled herbs over and over again until the herbs have no more flavor.  Store the boiled herbs in a container in the refrigerator until you are ready to re-use them, or re-use them right away and make enough for the whole week.

Transfer the tea to a bottle or another jug, and only fill it half way with the tea. Now dilute the rest with more spring water or boil more plain water and add to hot tea to drink hot.

Not-Just-Juice Cleanse – Revamped!

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

We’ve created two new cleanses for those of you that really like to eat. They’re designed to give the indulgent eater a clean break with a foray into the benefits of raw food and an introduction to how delicious it can be. This program is perfect for anyone (a friend or loved one) who needs to break away from the SAD diet!!!

You won’t starve on these cleanses, or want to chew the bedpost. In fact, you’ll be chewing plenty and getting stuffed – full of organic, fresh, nutrient-dense whole foods that will give your body what it needs while keeping your mind off the vices you are freeing your body from. Think of it as an introduction to how it feels to be one lucky duck all the time. With two programs to choose from, SHINE and GLOW, you can feel better and not have to give up good food!

“The meals are generously portioned and full-throttle delicious — we didn’t feel deprived for a second.” -Birchbox.com, luxury beauty product provider

Are Goji Berries Worth the Hype?

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Goji BerriesBy now you have heard of goji berries. If anything, probably too much over the last few years. All of a sudden goji berries took over the headlines of health food blogs and magazines with their claims of high antioxidants and a low glycemic index, and suddenly shelves were filled with the tiny red morsels. But are they really worth the hype? Can a little dried berry that looks like a Fruit Wrinkle (remember that ‘80s lunchbox staple?) really pack this much nutritional punch? Thankfully, the answer is yes!

Raw Cleanse with Immaculate Infatuation’s Creators

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

ANDREW

Meet Andrew and Chris.

Andrew and Chris moonlight as food bloggers and are the creators of Immaculate Infatuation-a rad website/blog restaurant-review brainchild, where you can go for honest, unpretentious (and often hilarious) recommendations for cool NYC restaurants.  The guys may have day jobs in the music industry, but judging from the roster of restaurants they’ve visited (hundreds, listed alphabetically) we suspect that this food thing is way more than just a hobby.  Some of Immaculate Infatuation’s most recent food rants and raves cover everything from talked-about new spots like Williamsburg’s Traif to New York classics like Gramercy Tavern. They’ve also delved into the vegan world (once) with a review about yours truly, Pure Food and Wine.

CHRIS

We were tickled that these mostly meat eating men gave our veggies positive reviews, so when they approached Sarma,  “feeling like sh*t” from doing the dirty work of restaurant reviewers, she jumped at the chance to get the guys to go from their regular diet of coffee, booze and this:

Andrew & Chris's former eats

to one week of an all vegan, all raw, all One Lucky Duck/Pure Food and Wine diet. Since Andrew and Chris are starting out from total debauchery, we wanted to go easy on them. Sometimes it may seem logical that if you’ve been behaving badly, you should jump on the latest juice cleanse bandwagon right away to wash away all your greasy sins, but in the end, that thinking will just make you feel horrible, and then you will be more likely to give up. So, we are keeping the boys well-fed with as much grub as they can handle, since they are already cutting out sooo much from their normal diet.

Andrew & Chris's food from One Lucky Duck

Follow their progress here, and to see what we are feeding them, check our Sarma’s blog and watch the video she posted! We’ll keep updating their progress too! Best of luck!

Brazil Nut Milk – Vanilla, Chocolate & Strawberry

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Picture 1

In an effort to keep everyone up to date on all of the ingredients we sell and love to use at One Lucky Duck and Pure Food and Wine, this is our second blog focusing on one ingredient, noting its health benefits and giving you a yummy recipe to try out! (Check out our Goldenberries blog before this)
This week it’s the Brazil Nut, a large hearty nut native to, you guessed it, Brazil. Though the Brazil nut is pretty widely known, its health benefits (and what to do with them) may not be. Sarma talks about the Brazil nut in her latest book, Living Raw Food:

800px-Brazil_nutsSMALL

Brazil nuts are unusually rich in selenium, an essential mineral and antioxidant that is otherwise hard to come by and incredibly under-rated. According to an article in USA TODAY, the results of studies on this mineral compellingly conclude that selenium is a serious superstar when it comes to preventing cancer, controlling viruses, lifting your mood, and supporting overall immunity. For example, a University of Arizona study found that a modest dose of a selenium supplement reduced overall cancer incidence by 42 percent. Most people are deficient in this mineral (a deficiency that saps energy). If that isn’t a good enough reason to start eating Brazil nuts, I don’t know what is.”

Agreed! In addition to selenium, Brazil nuts are a great source of magnesium and protein. They also contain Omega-6 fatty acids, which are good for your BRAIN!

Vanilla Brazil Nut Milk

(See below for Chocolate and Strawberry Variations too!)

1 cup  Brazil nuts, soaked 2 hours or more

4 cups filtered water

1/4 cup agave or raw honey

2 tablespoons coconut butter

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 packets stevia

Pinch of sea salt

In Vita- Mix or high speed blender, blend the nuts and water on high speed for about 2 minutes, to make sure the nuts are thoroughly blended. Strain the milk through a nut milk bag or multiple layers of cheesecloth twice for smoothness. Rinse the blender cup and place the milk back in it with the remaining ingredients. Blend to combine thoroughly and taste for sweetness.

VARIATIONS:

FOR CHOCOLATE MILK: add 3 heaping tablespoons of raw cacao powder or carob powder, plus an additional packet of stevia or tablespoon of agave to the blender along with the strained milk and other ingredients.

FOR STRAWBERRY MILK: add about 1 pint of washed and stemmed strawberries, plus an additional packet of stevia or tablespoon of agave, to the blender along with the strained milk and the other ingredients above.

ENJOY!

Eat goldenberries instead of that multivitamin supplement!

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

All you superfoods connosieurs out there may have heard of the Cape Gooseberry, Goldenberry, or Incan Berry before without realizing that they were in fact all the same delicious little fruit. “Physalis peruviana” (pretty sure you’ve never heard of THAT) is a little berry native to the South American tropics. First cultivated by the Incas (they really knew their stuff), this berry was taken to South Africa via the Cape of Good Hope (thus the Cape Gooseberry name) with English settlers in the 1800’s, and then to Australia and New Zealand, where it now grows abundantly in the wild.

goldenberriesclick picture

Little known to most mainstream fruit eaters, the Goldenberry is full of amazing health benefits and is genuinely delicious. Holistic medicine even advises eating goldenberries in lieu of a multivitamin as it is high in vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6, B12 (a difficult vitamin to get on a vegan diet) and bioflavinoids or vitamin P. Vitamin P contains antiviral, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antihitamine and antioxidant qualities. With all those anti’s you can think of this little dried fruit as containing mini armies defending your body against all sorts of free radical intruders.

So with all these healthy benefits, now you’re wondering, what do they taste like? Yellowish orange in color, the goldenberry has a sweet and tart taste almost like the flavor of a candied lemon. They are full of itsy bitsy seeds that have a slightly grainy texture, and they are almost always eaten dried (that’s how we sell ‘em). They are larger than a raisin and a really nice, unique alternative to them.

To get you pumped about our new favorite berry, we’ve included a simple and yummy shake recipe, created by Sarma that features goldenberries’ unique flavor perfectly. They are also great to snack on by themselves. We have them at both of our juice bar locations, packaged in our own One Lucky Duck glass jars which can be kept and reused to store dried goods, or as a beverage glass. They are also for sale on our website, though they come in travel-friendly packaging when bought online. Check them out, and see our recipe below:

Goldenberry Shake

1/4 pineapple

1 1/2-2 cups coconut water

1 frozen banana

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp yacon

1 tsp lucuma

1/2 cup goldenberries

pinch of salt

we recommend blending in a Vita Mix or high speed blender, goldenberries are chewy, and a regular blade may not blend them smoothly

ENJOY!

Why 1LD LOVES breakfast & our favorite breakfast recipe

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
credit Tara Donne

credit Tara Donne

People always say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Guess what?  They are right!

If you have ever done a fast, you must have heard how important it was to eat a certain way when “breaking your fast”. Breakfast is the breaking of your body’s overnight fast (hence the name) and it is the key to a great day!

Your body needs fuel in order to perform mental and/or physical tasks to its best ability.  If you skip breakfast, you will feel lethargic and tired and won’t be able to do your best work, whether it’s at school, the office, or the gym!

TOP 4 REASONS TO EAT BREAKFAST:

1. Improve your overall nutrition.

People who eat breakfast are more likely to get the nutrients their bodies need. A Louisiana study found that people who skipped breakfast rarely met even two-thirds of the daily requirements for most minerals and vitamins.

2. Enhance your performance.

Breakfast eaters have a more positive attitude toward school and work, and they perform better. A Harvard University/Massachusetts General Hospital study of children in Philadelphia and Baltimore schools discovered that students who usually ate school breakfast had improved math grades, reduced hyperactivity, decreased absence and tardy rates, and improved psycho-social behaviors compared with children who rarely ate school breakfast. (Pediatrics, January, 1998; Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, February, 1998)

3. Control your weight!

Breakfast increases your metabolic rate, which results in your burning calories faster than if breakfast was skipped. Breakfast also helps control the urge to eat a too big of a lunch.  Researchers from the National Weight Control Registry, a database of more than 3,000 people who have lost at least 60 pounds and kept it off for an average of 6 years, found that eating breakfast every day was a weight control strategy for 78% of the people in the registry.

4. Because it’s YUMMY!

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BREAKFAST?

The key to choosing a great breakfast is picking something high in FIBER. Fiber slows down digestion and keeps you satiated longer, which means that fiber-rich breakfasts continue to release energy to your body throughout the morning, keeping you energized until lunch!

Our YUMMY breakfast suggestion of the day is Chia Porridge (aka chia pudding but “porridge” sounds more breakfast-y)!  Chia is one of the best energy foods. It contains loads of Omega-3s, fiber, antioxidants, calcium, plus easily digestible protein. In just 1 ounce (approximately 4 Tablespoons) of Chia Seeds there are 11 grams of dietary fiber, 9 grams of protein, and 18% of your recommended calcium! Our nutrient-dense chia porridge a.k.a “pudding” recipe is great for kids, athletes, and also if you’re trying to get slim. Our recipe is the PERFECT  breakfast – think of it as the “superfood version” of Cream of Wheat.  It’s fantastic when topped with fresh fruit, dried fruit and/or nuts :)

Enjoy Sarma’s Chia Recipe from her book, Living Raw Food, for breakfast!

…You don’t even need to measure anything; just think a ratio of roughly one to three for chia seeds to nut milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, or whatever creamy liquid you want to use. You can use more liquid if you have time to let the seeds soak longer, but I’ve found this ratio works best for me, particularly when I want to eat soon. Simply pour the ingredients into a bowl, stir, walk away. Or stir it up at night before you go to bed, put it in the refrigerator, and  you’ll wake up with your energizing breakfast ready to go as you run out the door. ….

Plain Chia Pudding

1 cup chia seeds

3 cups nut milk, coconut milk, or hemp milk

3 to 5 tablespoons agave nectar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

1 /4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Pinch of sea salt

Place the chia seeds, milk, agave, and salt in a bowl (add vanilla and cinnamon, if desired) and stir well, so there are no clumps and all the chia seeds are coated in milk. Let this sit at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes, or cover and refrigerate. This pudding will keep well in the refrigerator for days.

ENJOY :)
