Banana Milk
So… what is one to do when you really want a bowl of chocolate crispies with cacao nibs in it for your morning breakfast fix, and you have no milk of any kind? And no nut butter in the cupboard to blend up (because you can do that, you know… a heaping tablespoon of nut butter in the blender + cold water, blend = milk! Cashew butter makes it yummiest. It’s the simplest easy recipe in new book). So, I had a bag of chocolate crispies, I had cacao nibs, and even goji berries to add, and ripe bananas to slice up on top, but no milk of any kind. Hmmm. So then I was thinking, what if instead of slicing them on top, I blended the banana with water to make a milky liquid? In the desperation for a raw cacao fix, I’ll try anything. So I tried it and it’s GOOD! And for the record, I usually have bananas in the freezer too for shakes, and the frozen ones make chillier milk. Or, you can use less water and add ice to unfrozen bananas. I still like cashew milk, brazil milk, hemp milk all better, but the banana milk works pretty well.
July 4th
It was a beautiful sunny day and I spent the majority of it indoors cleaning my apartment. I was so enthusiastically ambitious that I embarked on those projects you only do when you’re full of such ambition. Yes, I attacked my closets, and shelves. Trying on old clothes I don’t wear anymore from years ago and making piles of those that don’t fit, or were just the result of unfortunate decisions, to be passed along to tinier people and/or the salvation army. With piles all over my apartment, I’m getting antsy about the sunny afternoon and evening getting away from me entirely, and I get a text about coming out to a party in Brooklyn. All day I’d had a green shake, and yes… chocolate crispies and cacao nibs. I was feeling really good.
I did an interview earlier that week in which they asked what’s your kryptonite? I understood it to mean food-wise. One of the first things that came to mind was cold beer. I love it. I pass people in sidewalk cafes in the afternoons drinking pints of it and it looks so good. More so because I don’t have it very often. So this 4th of July, cold beer it was. I’m not going to go into detail about what else I had tastes of. Later I found myself meeting my friend Koti at a party at the home of one of our hosts. More cold beer. Lots of it getting spilled on my sneakers too, somehow. For the sake of experimenting with inserting photos into blog, below is (I hope) a photo from that night. If you come to Pure Food and Wine regularly, you’ll recognize all the lovely ladies in it as I am lucky enough they all work there.

I think this photo is going to be a little distorted looking and I don’t yet know how to fix it. This was the party at which the TP had run out, so I had my first experience using a coffee filter. Interesting. It worked all right, though a bit rough. It completely reminded me of the summer of ’92 when I lived in Latvia with m sister and the only TP one could find was narrow rolls of brown crinkly paper that reminded me of party streamers. I used to occasionally go for lunch at the American embassy cafeteria and I’d always leave with a couple rolls of soft white TP from the bathroom smuggled out in my bag. It was so exciting to have it, so soft and fluffy and white, and so to make it last we saved it only for special occasions, if you know what I mean.
Sunday morning after the party, I was not feeling so great. The less often I go out and drink, the more I appreciate how good I otherwise usually feel. No matter how much coconut water and green juice I try to make it up with, I still don’t have the energy to get much of what I need to get done done, which was a drag, because there was a lot of work I needed to get done (nevermind the clothes all over my floor). I plodded through some of it, but not very energetically. Now Monday morning I feel better, especially after my wake-up breakfast of chocolate crispies with cacao nibs. And looking forward to feeling even better tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Hi Sarma,
I got your new book in the mail on Friday and read it cover-to-cover immediately. I thought about how inspired I was after your first book, and realized that doesn’t even compare to this. I am so thankful to have found your site and everything you offer. I just wish I had the opportunity to visit Pure Food and Wine!
Thank you
Lisa
That banana milk is genius!! Love it. Normally I cannot eat bananas, but I should give that recipe a try.
Hope you’re feeling 100% better!
Met you the other night– you look so much healthier than you did before. Congrats on bulking up!!
Um…”bulking up”? I’m guessing you are joking. Anyway, Sarma, I’m hoping you guys get some more clothing options. I doubt I can fit into a “small” (maybe I’m the one bulking up??!). LOL
Miss Raw Food and u binge on beer. You’re kidding, right?????l
After reading your post I immediately went to Pure Takeaway and bought Chocolate Crispies to eat as cereal. I made my milk with a little of both banana and almond butter. I also put some cacao, agave, and a pinch of salt in the milk. It was SO GOOD!!! Thanks for the tip!
Also, I wanted to say that I just got your new book (which is fabulous) and the pineapple, cucumber, cilanto smoothie is off the hook!!! I’m already looking forward to making another tomorrow morning.
Banana milk sounds great!
I made the famous S&M salad last night, one of my favorite salads from the takeaway, so happy I can enjoy it in NJ now!
Have a lovely weekend!
Girl, I don’t know how there could be anyone tinier than you.
I wish I had your arms. They’re so petite and fabulous. I’m workin’ on it though.
I was wondering how much water should be used for the banana milk-I am curious to try it. Love the new site!!
